Okay, guys this is Discrete Optimization, week eight, sorry for last week, I was in China again and we had absolutely no internet connection. I couldn't even download slides last week. So one of the first things that I want to tell you guys this week is that we are so proud, okay. So this is amazing where we are at this point, look at this graph okay, we never thought we would get there okay. So this is around 700 people now, getting a certificate and when you look at this, this is around 200 getting the distinction, this is amazing. Right? So we never thought we would get there, this is very, very high numbers, we are really so proud of what you guys did. This is amazing, Okay? So we are really, really, really excited. you've seen on the forum the t-shirts, I love them, you know they are beautiful. Look at this one, even you know I am color blind but I can see the colors on this one. They are so bright, I love this color and stuff. Of course, we are already ordering these t-shirts ourselves okay, so look at this one. The other one is actually, and thanks for the people who actually submitting those solution, Alexli probably here. And so this is the, this is the [INAUDIBLE], the TSP one also completely crazy t-shirts. You know, once again I love these t-shirts, okay. You can order them. All the instructions are on the website if you are interested obviously. let me talk a little bit about the other stuff about what we're going to cover today. We're going to talk about the post-course survey, the TA program, and there will be an entire video on this one. I urge you to look at it, you know. And then other opportunities you'll see, and then some of the statistics that I'm giving you every week, and I'll talk a little bit about the fact that this is the final week, okay. So post-course survey, I think, you know, it's very important that we understand exactly how you felt about the class and the various topics. You know, if you want more details, less details, if this is covered the same level where you want more information, give us that feedback, you know, this is really important. Same thing about the assignments, which ones were too tough, which ones were too easy, you know, do you want more, really or do you want less? you know, you know, basically give us as much feedback as you can. Also once again you can post everything on the forum, we actually read this all the time, okay, we are really obsessed with this thing I think you notice, we read the first, first thing in the morning, you know late, you know last thing before sleeping. so put as many comments as you can, tell your stories and and, you know, we can tell you that we read everything, okay. so the TA program, okay so there will be an entire video there so what we want to do is improve the class so we want your help, okay? So, there are various ways you can help, you know there are very, various forms of commitment that you know, you can do and look at the video. We going to cover these things but it can be as easy as just participating in the forum, answering questions, giving hints to students. To something when you can really shape the class and I will tell you in the other video what that means, okay. But this is, you know, you can have a big impact on the class and I'll cover that in the other video, okay. So, but this is something we strongly believe in, you know, the teach assistant programs are making a huge difference in practice, so you know, just watch the video please, okay, good. yeah, right, okay. no opportunities you know, most of you know that I'm professor here at The University of Melbourne. I have another job actually which is leading the optimization group research group at NICTA. It's sup /g, it's essentially NICTA is a national ICT city center in Australia and is basically collaborating very very closely with you know the main universities and the top universities in Australia. Visit university of melbourne, the ANU, and the university of new software in Sydney. So essentially this group is like a national group of like 60 reseracher at this point five professor. And these professor are like vampires right, they like young blood and young blood for us well is students. Okay, so we love students and we are recruiting heavily students okay. So if you are interested okay, the Masters and PhD students, you, you, you would be enrolled in one of these universities and you would get you know for instance scholarship From NICTA, if you get into the phD program. So if you're interested in that, you know you can email, you know Sandra, who is the coordinator of the group, really the brain of the group essentially for more information. There are also optimization internship at NICTA, for four ,six ,12 months, make sure you want to do a PHD, you can come and see what it means to do research in such a group. And once again you can email us for more details. And finally, some of you have been so good that Phil Killby who has actually been leading the logistic part of the group was like "woah these solutions are really nice. I want these people to work for me" so if you are interested in logistics, like in the VRP assignment, okay. So you can talk to you can talk to once again send an e-mail to Sandra and Phil will look at your applications and decide if you, you know, if you want to, if you can join this, this four month internship that he's actually promoting, okay? So, once again these opportunities in, you know if you are you know, if you want to pursue more optimization with us. Okay? Now let my go back to the statistics now. This is the number of students active in assignments, okay? So this is, you know, basically, you know, very stable at this point, okay? slight decrease, okay? this is the total submissions graded, okay? And so there is this very bizarre thing here, right, so that's certainly, we have a lot more submissions, so we will like. What's going on? Okay, and this is the submission per active student, same thing. Okay, so what is happening? Okay, so this is the total number of submissions by people who are submitting like crazy, okay, and so you see top, you know, this is the second rank, this is the third rank, so about you know, 1500 for the second rank. And this is an interesting point, this is the first ranked student. This student has submitted 190,000 assignments, okay, soultions, over the course of this class. Okay, and so this is the submission over time, okay, so this is the beginning and then [SOUND] and this is a log scale right. So this is a, so this number, this increase kind of crazy. Right? So what happened? Okay, so what happened is that this student actually had a very nice program sending solution all the time, okay. Every time he would find a solution he would send it. You can do that with the infer structure that we have, probably it's not a good idea but still you know, you know. This is what happened and we took a little time to actually notice this. Okay, yep so this is the Participation per Assignment you have seen this graph before. it's very nice you know like 850 for the Warehouse Location okay, so this is a large number,if you can keep that number for the last assignment that would be terrific, okay? 650 for the VRP so which is also good. Some of the Puzzle Challenge are growing up, that's also good, okay, so you can get a little bit more points for your distinction, see if you want to do that. Okay, so keep these number little bit up and we'll be really, really, truly happy. one of the things that we have to tell you is that on August 20, all the submissions will stop counting toward your grades, so you have to submit before August 20, that's the last day that which, you know, the submissions will count for you grade. You can keep submitting, right, so but that won't, that won't count on for your grade but you can see oh, you know if I had a little bit more time I could have got a ten or okay. after that, after August 20 we'll take a couple of days and generate all the certificates for you guys. the course content remains open. You can keep submitting. You can keep looking at everything, okay. But, your certificate won't be reissued, okay. So August 20 is our deadline for getting a certificate, okay? So you can cram a lot of work this week to just you know get where you want to be. the next session probably in six or 12 months so the course will remain open until then. Once we go to the next session, you know the current section will, will become, the current session will become inaccessible, okay? So essentially we leave it open as much as we can and at some point we transition to the new one. Okay. So thank you. You know, I think it was really a great week. We'll have one more mail back probably last week. next week. For actually summarizing everything. But you know, most of you are ready to go to the next step in optimization. And once again, I love this graph you know. Thank you, guys.
