Second edition of "Exploring Quantum Physics" begins October 7

Hello, everyone! Based on feedback on the first edition of "Exploring Quantum Physics" on Coursera, we have decided to offer the course again, starting October 7, 2013. See https://www.coursera.org/course/eqp for the latest information. The first scheduled Meetup is described at http://www.meetup.com/Coursera/Orlando-FL/1005032/

The basic structure of the course will be the same, but there will be some revisions and new material based on what we learned in the first outing. Some homework questions will be based on material from the University of Maryland Ph.D. qualifier exam, to give you real experience in graduate-level tests in quantum mechanics given here.

If you completed our first edition, congratulations! If you did not, for whatever reasons, you are welcome back again! If you have recommendations to make to friends, please do so.

Thanks again for helping us shape the course. If you enrolled in the first edition, those course materials remain available to you at https://www.coursera.org/course/eqp , whether or not you follow any subsequent edition of the course.

We look forward to seeing you in class!

Class archives open

There was a glitch that caused the class archives to be closed. We don't know why - it was not our intention - anyway they are open again now.

Our thanks to those who brought this to our attention - and to all who participated in this class!

Week 7 Lectures and Homework 7

This is just a reminder that the Week 7 Lectures and Homework 7 have been posted as of today at 5 PM eastern time. The homework will be due two weeks from now on Monday, May 20, at 5 PM eastern time.

This week will features guest lectures on spin by Prof. Ian Appelbaum. Ian Appelbaum is an Associate Professor of Physics (and an Affiliate Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering) with tenure at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Delaware, and a postdoc at Harvard’s Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He earned his PhD in Physics at MIT with a thesis on ballistic electron emission microscopy and optoelectronics using hot electron injection methods. In 2008 he was given the NSF CAREER award, and in 2011 he received the Alexander M. Haig prize and “Outstanding Young Scientist Award” from the Maryland Academy of Sciences for his experimental breakthroughs in semiconductor spintronics research.

Homework deadlines extended and a comment on lecture 1 part IV

Hello everybody,

We have received a lot of feedback requesting that the due date for homeworks be extended to take into account your busy schedules. Accordingly we have decided to modify the homework schedule. All homeworks will now have a due date two weeks after they are posted, and can be submitted for late credit up to three weeks after they are posted.

Additionally due to some confusion regarding Lecture 1 Part IV, we have uploaded a new version of this segment which should hopefully be clearer.

First homework has been posted

Hello everyone,

This is just a reminder that the first homework has been posted. The soft deadline will be 5 pm Eastern Time on Monday April 1st. Any homeworks submitted after this date will have 5% credit deducted each day late. No submissions will be accepted after 5 pm Eastern Time Monday, April 8th.

You will be given 3 attempts at the homework and you will receive the highest score out of those three. You may continue to attempt the homework after your three attempts but no further submissions will count for credit.

Welcome to Exploring Quantum Physics

Welcome to our course, "Exploring Quantum Physics."

The course will get started on Monday, March 25, 2013. In the meantime, please take a look at the introductory video and browse the Syllabus and the Course Logistics page. You are also encouraged to use the Discussion Forums to ask questions, setup a study group, or make any comments or suggestions about the course.

As you will see from the Syllabus, this course will cover a diverse array of topics in quantum physics ranging from the basics of quantum mechanics to superconductivity, topological states of matter, and laser physics. All in all, you will learn about a dozen Nobel-prize winning discoveries in quantum physics and gain a broad understanding of this exciting and lively field.

As a first step, please complete this brief survey to tell us about yourself.

Thank you for your interest and we look forward to a great course!
