Chapter One
Pizza. Platter upon platter of homemade pizza was brought out from the kitchen and placed at creative intervals on the buffet tables around the hall. Yum. Dandelion Marie Fields, only child of Dan and Leona, had said her vows today to the man of her dreams.
She watched her new husband scoot around the room, sneaking a piece of pizza while looking around to see if anyone saw him. Micky James Foreva, new star hockey player for the Detroit Red Wings, looked so handsome in his tux. A rare feat for her eyes. Micky was usually in hockey gear; even during his own time he dressed in team jerseys.
Actually, the idea of him being in team colors on his wedding day wasnt all that farfetched. Mickys image stood out against the wedding backdrops. The entire hall was decorated with team colors and creative displays. Hockey sticks wrapped in roses hung from the ceiling while others formed arches for the bride and groom to walk through. Red and white jerseys hung on the back of each chair, the sleeves tied into bows while black pucks formed the base for each floral arrangement on the tables. A miniature referee jersey took pride of place, in the center of each table covered by white linen tablecloths. On the plates were black and white striped napkins, folded with plain white ones to make them look like tuxedos. Everything supported the team logo. Inside the match packets which were wrapped in team colors and sat prominently displayed across every plate, their gift to all their guests, was a free ticket to see a game. Everywhere Dande looked she saw her husband represented in so many ways. He was so proud of his profession and that confidence showed itself in his every move today.
Micky was a workaholic; he lived and breathed sports. Actually, it took a lot of doing to have the wedding in the middle of the playoffs, but it was the last weekend to get their quickie honeymoon trip half-price. Since the team had a few days rest before taking on the next team in the playoff series, it was the best time to do it. The series could run until the end of June and they wanted to be settled in their new home in Michigan by then.
Sweetheart, youre holding up the line. Leona squeezed her daughters shoulders and moved her along.
Sorry. Im just trying to take it all in. Mother, you certainly got carried away with the theme.
I know, but it looks beautiful. Whoever thought one could successfully decorate a wedding with a hockey theme? If youd have asked me this two years ago, Id have thought you were crazy.
You did a good job, Mom. It really looks nice. Thank you.
Youre welcome, dear. Now just enjoy it. Leona swung away to greet new guests as they entered the hall.
Dande still couldnt move from where she stood. She smiled at the team-colored balloons suspended in bunches all over the hall. Then her gaze rested on the wedding cakes. Yes, two. That was the one thing shed insisted on. A wedding cake of her own liking. It was a five-tiered beauty, embellished with real and iced white roses and oodles of pearls. The cake next to it was a little smaller with the same white icing, but with team logos at intervals around it. Both cakes sat on a motored lazy Susan and twirled slowly around for everyone to see. Gorgeous.
There you are honey. What took you so long to get downstairs to the hall?
Ive been here for a few minutes already. I cant stop staring. What do you think, Micky? Do you like it?
Are you kidding, its terrific. I love it. Your mom did a great job.
Im glad you like it. She and her friends worked hard to make the whole team feel comfortable. By the looks of things theyre doing just that.
They are. Oh, honey, I got a taste of that homemade pizza and its out of this world delicious. Are you hungry? Wanna steal a piece?
No, Micky. I can wait a few more minutes. And by the way, thank you. Looking at her tall, handsome husband, she saw his dark brown eyes twinkle in the surrounding light, saw how nicely coiffed his short brown hair stayed with the help of gel and how sexy he looked with that barely-there black shadow growth on his face. The one shed insisted on.
What are you thanking me for now, honey? Wait till later. He raised his thick eyebrows and made a knowing face at her.
You know what Im thanking you for. She smiled coyly, her hand automatically grasping his.
Not a clue, sweetie. Did you like the French kiss you got in the church, cause I have a few more waiting for you. He winked wickedly, enfolding her arm through his.
I liked that too, but especially your promise to stay away from television sports, radio sports and any kind of media. Your promise to stay completely away from it for one whole weekend means more to me than you could ever guess. I know how much it all means to you, especially being in the playoffs right now. I know it has to be a trying time, honey. But the weekend will go by so fast, youll see.
I know. Dont sweat it, Dande. Before you brought it up Id forgotten all about it. By reminding me, youre making me curious and that may be dangerous.
Im sorry. Im just so proud of you. Making it to the NHL is big time, and now the playoffs. But by making this weekend all about us is the most precious, thoughtful gift you could ever give me.
Believe me, I understand. Our lives together so far has been surrounded by sports, and most likely will be for the rest of our lives. I think I can handle one weekend. Stop worrying your beautiful head. He patted her arm. You look beautiful, by the way. I cant believe they managed to put your hair up like that. I didnt think it was long enough. You know what? I can barely see those freckles on your nose either. I mean, I know youre wearing makeup and stuff, but it doesnt look like it. You look gorgeous. He grabbed her by the shoulders, looking deeply into her eyes. What she saw there was pride, passion and red-hot intent. And when you smilewhowie! Your face and eyes light up the room and those lips of yours make me think of all the things I want to do to you. Youre driving me crazy.
She grinned, her smile widening even further when she saw his eyes darken with promised passion. Thank you. Im not worrying, Im bursting with pride. Cant you see that? Her arms went around his waist and pulled him close. Boldly, beneath his tuxedo jacket, Dande grabbed his ass cheeks and squeezed the perfect rounds, kneading them forcefully as she felt his quick rise to attention.
Easy, girl. We have to get through the reception first. He swooped down to take her lips in very hot, erotic kiss.
Break it up, you two, someone yelled then hooted.
Yeah, go get a room, why dont you? someone else crowed.
Eventually Dande and Micky took their place at the head table. Finally, pizza. Unable to wait for the waiter to fill his plate with the requested appetizer, he grabbed a full piece from the platter and with his tongue, hooked the pulled cheese into his mouth.
Dande accepted hers from the waiter and immediately picked it up to eat. Someone yelled from the crowd for them to feed each other. With pleasure. Dande offered her piece to Micky while she accepted his.
Simultaneously they bit into each others piece of pizza. Dandes teeth sank into the thick crust, a double cheese and pepperoni sensation, and pulled. Micky did the same. Strings of cheese hung plentifully from each others mouths, jiggling with movement. The crowd cheered.
Slowly and deliberately, Dande sucked in her cheese, chewed and swallowed. She watched Micky bob his head to get all of his before it had a chance to land on his tux. The Adams apple in his throat moved up and down, taunting her, inviting her to nuzzle there. Concentrate.
His throaty laugh added to her sex-filled yearnings. Their lips got closer to each other as they continued to chew, and Dande seductively nibbled on his, pulling his bottom lip out provocatively. Delicious, honey, she mouthed into his lips.
Dande, youre making me crazy. Stop teasing me or Im going to give the guests more than what they bargained for. Under the table his right hand sought her leg and squeezed. Without warning he pulled her forward, nearly off her chair.
EeeMicky. She laughed as she consumed the last of the cheese before connecting her lips to his once again. Her arms crept around his neck for effect as the crowd chanted, then she pulled him in tight. I love you, she whispered.
I love you too. His tongue trailed a sensuous path to her ear, where he briefly nibbled and licked the delicate lobe before he returned to her mouth in a kiss full of molten desire.
Back to the pizza, guys. Leave the kissy-faces for later, they heard over the crowd.
Dande reluctantly broke the kiss, her lips lingering for a few seconds longer than they needed to. Her eyes locked with Mickys, seeing the promises in his and conveying a few of her own.
Once the pizzas, salads and wine were all served and everyone was eating, the damn glass clinking began. Not that she didnt want to kiss her husband, its just the crowd hardly gave them a chance to enjoy their beloved meal.
Not that she was really worried, though; after dinner Desert pizzas were to follow. Several different flavors to satisfy all tastes. When Dande had a slice of her favorite dessert, she announced to everyone to save room for the cake.
Then there were the speeches. Funny ones; sad ones; happy ones. And that was just from family and close friends. Mickys teammates and coaches had a rehearsed agenda also. Mostly a lot of jokes and a lot of ribbing along the lines of; what was between you and that slap shot? Foreva!.
Dande listened and laughed. A lot of the antics shed already heard about, but there were also some new ones. Micky laughed and blushed a few times, but underneath it all she could sense a deep pride. The team was all there and that meant a great deal to him. The married players brought their wives and the singles guys were target fodder for the single ladies. She just hoped they had some elbow pads with them.
Finally it was washroom break and Dande excused herself, grabbing Lisa, her maid of honor, as she slowly weeded their way out of the main hall. It wasnt easy, though. Everybody grabbed at her, called to her, wanted to know everything from where she got her dress to can you introduce me to so and so?.
Lisa, save meplease! she whispered desperately. Dande ran her hand across her forehead, wiping away the perspiration.
Put your head down and let me push you through. Ready?
Yes. Push. She exhaled, bracing herself for the rush.
Lisas ingenuity was her salvation. She made it look like a game. Rushing the bride to the restroom never looked so exciting. Thank you. The inside of the ladies room was cooler than the hall. Once the door was shut, Dande relaxed and a tremendous weight was immediately lifted from her shoulders. Jesus. Thats a long time to go without a washroom break.
How do you feel, Mrs. Foreva? Lisa hugged her best friend.
Right now my back teeth are floating. Can you hold my reticule?
Sure. Go ahead.
Thanks.
Welldo you feel any different?
No. Not really. She struggled with her gown inside the cubicle. Its been such a whirlwind day, nothing has sunk in yet.
Micky looks so happy, Dande. He cant keep his hands off you.
I know. Hes counting the time till we get out of here and into our suite. But that wont be for a while yet.
Did you tell anyone what hotel youre staying at?
No way. And dont you dare tell anyone either. If you do, well arrive only to find it toilet-papered or something.
No one would do that, Lisa said just above a whisper.
Yeah, right.
Lisa handed her a paper towel and re-arranged her gown and train. I think youre all set.
Im as set as Ill ever be. Lets go.
As soon as the door opened, a surge of voices, laughter and heat assailed them both. The crowd was much louder, no doubt due to the open bar and free-flowing wine. The dinner band was still playing softly while the evening one set up. Theyd reached that pivotal time where there was a lull just before the major hoopla.
She walked straight into Micky as she progressed into the hall. Hey sweetheart, where are you headed? Automatically, her arms went around his neck, her hands shaping his head to force it down to hers. Mmm, I can still taste pizza.
And you, my beautiful bride, taste like
Shh, people will hear you. Whispering in his ear always drove him crazymore like hornyand most of the time she did it on purpose. It was like an aphrodisiac, knowing she held such power over him. Watching him contain his urges always made her giggle.
Youre a tease, Mrs. Foreva. Just you wait until later. You wont be able to escape and Ill have no mercy.
You talk the talk, Micky dear, but we both know youre putty in my hands. This time she curled her tongue inside his ear, moistening it as she spoke. She clung to him when he physically shuddered.
Christ. Im getting a boner. Youve got to stop this. He closed his eyes and groaned.
Okay. Later. Someone is calling me to the stage anyway. Dande hugged him one more time before stepping away. Will you be back shortly?
Yes. I wont be long, pudding pop. Try not to miss me.
Ill try, but it wont be easy, stud bear.
Micky growled at her like a bear in heat. Ohoo, I cant wait to get my hands on you.
Micky she made smooching sounds with her mouth hurry back. Every time you go away, you take a pizza me with you.
Chapter Two
A passing waiter stopped to offer Dande and Lisa flutes of champagne. Both girls accepted a glass, cheered each other and giggled as the bubbly burned down their throats. I love champagne. Lisa licked her lips appreciatively.
So do I. Dont let me dance on any tables tonight, Lisa. Tie me down if you have to.
Or the bar. I wont let you go coyote ugly on me. Dont worry. Just dont make any sudden moves or youre on your own, kid.
Ill try. Dande twirled on the spot, her dress flying around her in a perfect circle.
Together they joined the masses. The crowd had dispersed as the band continued to set up. There were groups everywhere: a line-up at the bar, children running loose, and the photographer snapping her every move. Not to mention the videographer over her left shoulder. If she made a fool of herself, it would be recorded forever in print and film.
The band tested the microphones and were about to start the festivities. Time flew. No matter where she looked, there was excitement or people calling her over. She was ripped from one group to another.
The singer suddenly spoke into the microphone. He announced the first dance, the bridal waltz, for her and Micky as husband and wife. Dande strolled to the center of the hall and noticed Micky wasnt back yet. She couldnt see him. The lead singer was promptly informed and the decision was made for her to dance with her father.
Dan Fields sauntered toward Dande, his arms extended. Dande watched him come toward her. He looked so happy, and yet there was a sadness about him. If she called him on it, she knew what hed say. Im losing my only daughter.
His brown hair, speckled with gray, took on a youthful hue. His eyes shone brightly, partly from the lighting and partly because of the wine. Dad, you look chipper tonight. She enfolded him in her arms and squeezed.
Thank you, daughter, I feel terrific. You, on the other hand, look better than anything out of Bride Magazine.
Ohoo, very complimentary. Thank you.
The only other woman who mildly compares is your mother. Shes having a grand time. Look at her over there mingling with the crowd. Shes enjoying every minute.
I know. She hasnt stopped all day.
Wheres Micky? I saw him a few minutes ago. Dan glanced around the room.
Probably taking a washroom break. He must have gone outside with some of the guys. Some of them do smoke, you know.
Maybe I should send someone out to tell him the dancings begun.
Thats okay, Dad. Im sure hell be in shortly. I wouldnt miss this moment with you for anything. She hugged him tightly.
Dan kissed her cheek. Damn, Im going to miss you. The house is going to be so empty. Itll just be your mom and I chasing each other around the house. Speaking of which, here she comes.
Hey, you two, how about a threesome? Leona took hold of one arm each and placed them around herself.
I beg your pardon? Dande laughed even though she knew what her mother meant.
Youre my only daughter, too. Lets break with tradition and let Mom join in this dance.
Cmon in here. Dan squeezed her to his side. Of course you should be here. Look at me, how happy can one man be with his two favorite women at his side?
It doesnt get better than this. Dande smiled, embracing them both.
The three of them circled the room several times, the band feeding their family bond as well as the warm compassion from the crowd. Afterward, people cheered and clapped and the trio made way for the rest of the wedding party to join in.
It wasnt long before the whole crowd was up on their feet, mingling and dancing. Dande frog-danced her way over to join a childrens circle and proceeded to teach them the ins and outs of the antiquated Chicken Dance.
When the singer finally stopped, the sighs and exhalations were loud. People, young and old, dashed for their drinks at the tables. Dande had set hers down somewhere but couldnt remember where, so she scooped another glass from a hovering waiter. Damn, thats good, she said to herself after a rather big mouthful.
Dande looked up to the stage when she heard her name. Had she heard right? Surely they werent calling her to join them up there, were they? When she realized the time had arrived for her to toss her bouquet and for Micky to toss her garter, she began her trek to the front of the hall. But where the hell was Micky? Dande stood on her toes, trying to see if she could spot her husband anywhere over the crowd. The crowd had jostled her pretty good. It was more than likely Micky was finding the same.
Dande kissed a few aunts and uncles, hugged friends and children all the while making her way toward the stage. People had left a narrow pathway for her to go through. She couldnt tell if Micky was behind her. Actually, when she thought about it, she hadnt seen him since the washroom break. She hoped he was behind her. Unless there was another narrow path at the other end for him. Maybe they would meet in the middle. How cute.
By the time Dande reached the stairs to the stage, her veil and train needed adjusting. She asked a band member to call Lisa for her. It was a few minutes before Lisa could make her way through the crowd. Man, this gang is getting rowdy.
I know. Its every person to his own, starting now. I need you to help me with my veil and train. She pulled at her gown, trying to straighten the many folds.
Here, let me do that. Lisa slapped Dandes hands away. Ive got it.
Funny how one doesnt realize how long and awkward these things are until you start moving around in them.
Youll be able to get out of it soon enough. Time is just flying by.
I know. Hey, Lisa? Have you seen Micky? Is he making his way through the crowd?
I just came out of the human pathway and didnt see him.
Really?
Well, I didnt look back, but if he was behind me, hed be here by now.
True. Is there another one on the other side of the stage? Again she strained to see something, anything. No luck.
I dont think so. Lisa continued to adjust her veil then scooped her train in her arms.
Ready?
As ready as Ill ever be. Dande turned around, grabbed the railing and started up the wooden steps to the stage with Lisa directly behind her.
The crowd hooted while a band member helped her get the microphone working. Finally Dande took it in her hand but didnt move it to her mouth right away. Instead, she scanned the immediate area, the crowd, and what she could make out in the distance. She didnt see Micky anywhere. Where the hell was he? Could he be behind the bar, throwing back a few shooters with the guys? Or was he still outside? She wouldve liked nothing better than to announce a call and search over the microphone, but on the other hand, she didnt want to cause any unnecessary alarm either. Maybe he had this big surprise planned which would be ruined by her haste. Jesus. He could have given me some sort of heads-up.
Dande cleared her throat into the microphone. Attention single ladies, now is the time for you all to line up in front of the stage area. One lucky person is going to catch this gorgeous bouquet. She watched as the women came out of the crowd and jostled each other for the best spot on the floor before her. Good-natured ribald comments could be heard, encouraging the already excited females. Are you ready, ladies?
Yes! was the screamed response. Dande turned around and flung the bouquet as hard as she could into the air. She listened to the screeches and screams before turning to see who ended up with it. Very interesting. It was one of Mickys teammates girlfriends. That should put the buzz in the guys ear. She chuckled and signaled to Lisa to help her down the stairs.
That was it. Her little duty was over in a bat of an eye. Micky was supposed to throw her garter at the single men, but that obviously wasnt going to happen. What the hell was he up to? Her irritation began to rear itself.
Dande stepped away from the stage. Thanks, Lisa. You can let it drop now.
Can I get you anything else before I wrangle that good-looking dude from Mickys team?
Hey, go get em, girl. I introduced you, didnt I?
Oh, yeah. Now its time to make my move.
Good luck. Im going to walk around the hall and look for Micky.
Do you want me to go with you?
No. You go do what you have to do. Im fine. If I need you, Ill send a messenger to hunt you down. No sooner did she have the words out, the minister tapped her on the shoulder. Father Rex.
Dandelion Marie, I cant leave here without dancing with the beautiful bride. He took her hand and led her back onto the dance floor.
Father Rex, thank you for everything. She moved with the minister in tiny semi-circles.
Ive been looking forward to this day. You know, Ive known you since the day you were born. Thats almost twenty-six years. Seeing you here today makes me very proud and happy. I can identify with the feelings your parents are sharing today.
Thank you, Father Rex.
Dande, if I may say so, you turned out just perfect for one spoilt, only child.
Sure, you can say that now. She laughed, remembering all the one-on-one counseling she and Father Rex went through. Not to mention all the advice and talks he shared with her parents on how to handle a hell-bent teenager.
Ah, you went through what every other kid in the world goes through. Im just happy I was able to help.
Thank you for that too, Father Rex. I know I was a handful.
A little high strung maybe, but thats understandable. Youre the apple of Mom and Dads eye and they indulged your every whim.
Just say it, Father. I was a spoilt brat.
Okayyou were spoilthe laughed, his eyes glazing over with remembrancebut never a brat.
Youre being kind. I needed a good swift kick in thebutt. She checked her word use at the last second.
Youre being hard on yourself, Dande. If the truth be told, Ive never met such a passionate person. Passionate people feel and experience everything more deeply than others; its a fact of life. The trick is knowing how to handle those situations.
Youre the expert, Father. Episode after episode of passionate situations, as the minister called them, flashed through her mind. Like the time she wanted to run away and marry the cool guy from her grade nine French class. Henri, wasnt it? Oh, how shed been passionate about that. Only a financial statement drawn up by Father Rex, with two columns, one showing expenses and the other showing zero income, made her see the practicality of waiting. Still, she vowed to save her allowance and make it happen. Of course it didnt, and Father Rex knew it wouldnt. But he told her it would be in her best interests to save her allowance because with every year that passed, the expense column would expand and shed need a good nest egg to see her dream come to fruition. Within six months, her plan to marry Henri fizzled. Not only was she glad she didnt run off with him, she now hated him with a passion. The point was, whenever her parents couldnt get through to her, Father Rex had always been there to guide her against a head-strong time. There were so many more episodes like that one, she couldnt get them in order in her head. Youd think the man would be disgusted with her. Yet here he was, dancing with her at her wedding and singing her praises. The man had the patience of a saint.
My thanks is to see you here today on this joyous occasion and watch you proceed on lifes journey.
Sounds like another way of saying Im someone elses problem now. Dande laughed as Father Rex made a funny face.
You were never a problem. Im just thrilled youre happy. Micky is a wonderful fellow.
Thank you, Father Rex, for everything.
Dande gathered her train over her left arm and slowly made her way toward the exit. Although she didnt wear a watch, she knew it had been a considerable amount of time since shed last saw Micky. Where the fuck are you? Her temper was very close to taking over. She asked a guest who came out of the mens room if Micky was inside. No. She opened the large outer doors to see if he was still outside with the boys. Not there either. Only two or three people stood outside smoking. Micky didnt smoke anyway.
What was going on? Did he skip out on her? Did he take a look around the hall and decide this wasnt for him after all? No. No. Im starting to panic. He wouldnt do that to me. There has to be a logical explanation. I just have to figure it out.
Her cousin Lucy recognized the look of concern on her face. Is something wrong, Dande? You look worried.
Hi, Lucy. Have you seen Micky by any chance?
I saw him a while ago. Why?
How long ago? I need to speak to him.
Im not sure exactly, maybe an hour ago? It was the last time I walked this way to the washroom. She laughed. Anyway, he was headed toward the basement.
Thanks, Lucy. The basement? What the fuck was he doing in the basement? Dande wasnt even sure where it was. She had to search for another door. When she spotted what looked like the door she was seeking, an unexplained sense of dread invaded her body. Her legs went weak, trembling with every step. Her breathing became constricted, making every intake of breath painful. Her hands and body shook while her skin battled to control the goose-bumps. It was an eerie feeling. Slowly, she moved forward and took the steps one at a time. The heels of her shoes were cushioned by the worn, striped carpet, while the material of her gown caressed the narrow, dark opening. A musty scent mingled with mothballs and cedar assailed her nostrils, adding to her disquiet.
She heard a noise. A sound. It was sharp and distinct. There it was again. More of them this time. Voices. Many voices. Wait a minutewas that Mickys voice? Dande quickened her pace, moving toward the sounds. A television? Was she mistaken? Now the men were cheering and whistling. A game. They were all watching a game. Jesus.
Soundless in her approach, Dande stepped over the threshold of what looked like a medium-sized kitchenette-cum-storage room. Micky? What the hell are you doing?
Chapter Three
Silence fell over the room. Except for the creaky squeaks from the plank wood floor, which on its own sent her panic to the forefront. Someone clicked the television off. All she could hear now was her own heavy breathing. The sound barreled through her ear canals and ricocheted off the walls straight to her head. It pounded into her brain yet wouldnt ring true. She didnt understand. What the hell was happening? Micky, what the hell are you doing? She thought shed repeated the question, but couldnt be sure.
DandeI was just on my way upstairs.
What? His words cut through her funk.
I was just on my way up, he repeated, his Adams apple slowly bobbing up and down as he swallowed.
No. No. What are you doing down here? Slowly, the pounding receded and a thread of awareness filtered through. An awareness she wasnt sure she would like. The more the seconds ticked by, the more she was convinced she would not like what he had to say.
I was justcatching the score of the game, he blurted out.
Dande saw his face suffuse with color. It rushed to cover his cheeks and down his neck. The deep red was indicative of something ominous. Catchingthe score? The incredulous tone in her voice came from the deep hollows of her lungs. A dangerous spot.
Look, Dandeyou dont understand.
Oh, I think I do. She tried to swallow the lump in her throat.
No, Dande, you dont.
Moving toward her was not a good idea. She took a step backwards out of the room, allowing all of the other guys to make a hasty exit. She stared straight ahead amidst mumbles of excuse me, Dande and sorry, Dande. Sorry my ass. These blockheads werent sorry. They did this deliberately. The church doesnt keep a television in the basement; they obviously asked permission to set it up. Of all the dirty, rotten, underhanded things to do Especially when Micky knew how she felt about it this weekend of all weekends.
Im sorry I got drawn into this, Dande. He took another step forward.
I bet you are. Dont come near me. She raised her hand, arresting any further advance.
I know what youre thinking, so dont. Let me explain before you twist everything out of shape. Again he tried to move ahead only to be stopped by both her hands in the air.
Twistout of shape? Me? I dont think so. Im not blind; I know what I saw. I know exactly whats going on here. Youre the one who will be twisting a long-winded tale. The only thing is, Im not sure I want to hear it. She took another step back.
Dont be silly. Look, please come in here for a minute so I can explain.
No. I dont need an explanation, she hissed, unable to control her anger any longer now that the shock was wearing off.
Youre angry.
Fucking right, Im angry. You made me a promise and I believed you.
Okay, thats it. He lunged forward and grabbed her arm, pulling her back into the room.
Dande protested and she fought ineffectively against his overpowering strength. Let go, Micky. He did, but stood in the doorway, blocking her escape.
Look, Dande, Im not proud of this but the team wanted to see part of the game.
I bet.
Its true. The winner of this series is who we play next in the playoffs. Its important. His voice leveled off.
More important than your promise to me?
Jesus!
You dont have to answer that. I got my answer, didnt I?
No, Dande. Please dont be like this.
Did you ask Father Rex to have this set up down here?
They did, but I went along with it. Maybe I should have told you, but we were only down here for about fifteen minutes. Hell, no one even noticed.
Is that what you think? She was incredulous; her eyes spat fire. Youve been gone at least an hour and
An hour? No way.
Oh, yes you have. I danced the bridal waltz with my father. I was up on stage by myself, throwing my bouquet, but guess what? The garter is still on my leg. She motioned at her leg with her hands.
Micky checked his watch. Jesus. Oh God, Dande, I had no idea.
No, you didnt. Am I supposed to go through the rest of my wedding day by myself? Is this a precursor to what the rest of our lives is going to be like?
No, no. Dande, youre spinning out of control. Stop it.
Stop it? She threw her head back, laughing with a mocking edge. You want me to stop it?
Oh God. He ran his hands through his hair. This isnt good.
Youre right about that. This isnt good. Not at all.
Come and sit down for a minute. Lets talk this through.
No. I understand the situation. Theres nothing more to explain. She bent her head and tried to get past him.
Dammit, youre stubborn. Will you just sit for a minute?
No.
Fine. Stand then, but youre not leaving till we hash this out.
Whats there to hash? I think we both know where we stand. She couldnt stop her heart from thrashing around in her chest.
Dande, I just meant to come down for a few minutes. The others were going to watch some of the game, keep checking the score and start preparing a game plan for us. I admit, I came down and let time slip away. Im sorry. We dont have to make a big deal out of it.
Oh, but it is a big deal. You made me a promise, one that I held very dearly and took very seriously. It meant the world to me because I happen to know how important hockey is to you, and how important this particular time of year is. When you promised to give that all up for this one weekend, you were putting me first for once. It made me feel special. But Im not special, am I, Micky? No. This was quite a slap in the face.
Will you stop the dramatics? His own temper threatened to erupt. Look, hockey isnt just a game to me. Its my work and our livelihood. And it isnt something easily dismissed, especially right now. Im one of the rookies, for fuck sake. I have to work extra hard both on and off the ice. He stepped toward her. Dande, I screwed up. Im sorry, but it doesnt mean I dont love you.
What does it meanexactly? That for the rest of our lives Im the second most important thing, second on your list of priorities, the second thing you need to remember? Just the little woman who tags along for a pat on the ass now and then.
Please dont do this. He hung his head, shaking it from side-to-side.
I didnt do anything. I was having a blast at my own wedding until you dumped all over me.
I didnt dump on you, he said, his voice dangerously low.
No? You wouldnt think so, would you?
I didnt. He took another step closer despite her glaring eyes and determined body stance.
You know, Micky, maybe its a good thing this happened now before we got in too deep. I meanIm not sure I can live with these facts. So maybe this is Gods wayin his house, I might addto make me see the reality of it all.
Okay, now youre talking absolute rubbish. This is ridiculous and not getting us anywhere.
Youre wrong. Its getting me somewherethe hell out of here. She tried to sidestep him.
Oh, no you dont. Youre not leaving here until we settle this.
I think youve done that. Again her attempt to walk past him failed. Micky took hold of her wrist and squeezed. That hurts! While he let up on his hold, he didnt let go.
Ive apologized for what Ive done. What more can I do?
You can let me go.
Never. What else?
Dande pulled at her arm only to have him tighten his grip. It was a very strong grip. The man had pumped iron for years, had built up his upper body. Theres no way she could fight him in a battle of muscle. Just let me go. The weight of the whole ordeal suddenly settled on her shoulders. As if a half ton truck had fallen on top of her. Tears began to well in the corner of her eyes. Dande shook her head in disbelief. What the hell was wrong with this picture? Had she been wrong about Micky all along? Never in a million years did she imagine herself standing at her own wedding, being forced into a cold, harsh self-appraisal. How do I feel? Do I go on with this sham for the sake of everyone upstairs? Not logical.
She really didnt see this coming. Shed been swept away by his charm and personality from the moment she first laid eyes on him. It happened so fast, so unexpectedly, like a paper sail in a rushing river. Naturally, she was helpless to do more than go with the compelling tide. Back then, she never took the time to think about or assess beyond the present. She just gave into him mindlessly.
What the hell is love, anyway? Why do I feel the way I do about Micky, rather than any other man? His looks? His status? Other men were as good looking, but they didnt do a thing to her heartbeat or her pussy. Maybe his wealth and power was what did it for her? If he hadnt been wealthy and famous, would she have looked at him twice? Was it his personality? Micky had the personality of a cement truck. Hes big, hes there, hes in your face and can crush anyone under his feet if he wanted to.
There was a lot of hostility in the way she felt about him right now. She couldnt hide from herself that her emotions towards him were complicated, involved, convoluted and like a double ball of multi-colored wool, twisted together and almost impossible to unwind without force or temper. When they were together she couldnt take her eyes off him; he fascinated her. But as images flashed through her head, she also took on that betraying weakness, that flaw in his personality and it irritated her.
Dande looked up into Mickys face. His wide, firm mouth trembled at the corners, his long, dark lashes fanned his under-eye area, and his thick neck throbbed with a wild pulse. How could she let her imagination run away from her? There was a pain in her throat when she swallowed. How does one pinpoint the focus of so deep an attraction? Maybe she was deluding herself. It happens. Or should she look more closely into her own nature for a clue. Then again, did it really matter?
What really mattered was what was happening right here, right now. How it all developed didnt mean squat anymore. History. Gone. So why the hell did she feel the need to go back to that point in time? Proof she was frazzled and thrown off balance. Oh, God, what have you done?
Micky tried to pull her into his arms. Dande, come here.
Her free hand swung up and slapped his face. No!
*****
Silence echoed in the room as he looked down at her in time to see her pearly tears finally brim over to spill onto her cheeks. He rubbed his cheek ruefully; hed never seen her so furious. I guess I deserved that.
But did he really?
All he did was check on the scores. He needed to be apprised of the competition. It was his living, for goodness sake!
So what if he forgot about the time a little? It wasnt his fault the game was a close one. It wasnt anything like she had tried to make it out to be. She was just as important to him as hockey; he showed up to the wedding, didnt he?
So what if he missed out on the bridal waltz? There would be plenty of occasions to dance together in the years ahead of them. It was only one little dance for crying out loud. Nothing majorly important.
So what if he didnt take the garter off her leg and throw it into the crowd? He didnt like the idea of all those men ogling her leg anyway. She should be grateful he was thinking of her modesty.
So he made a little mistake; forgot the time. That was no reason for her to get so bent out of shape. Couldnt she see she meant as much to him as hockey? He just needed to keep an eye on the score, is all. And catch a snippet of what he was up against in the playoffs.
You deserve more than that. Thankfully, her gown prevented her from kicking him in the nuts. Frustrated, she stamped her foot. She looked so adorable when she did that.
The unbalanced movements gave him the advantage he needed. Come here. He embraced her with both arms and held her still. I love you, Dande. Lets move on with our special day, shall we?
Our special day? What a joke. I went through the motions up there like a fucking idiot. Everybody is probably laughing at me. She exhaled and struggled against him, the movement arousing him.
No, Dande, thats not true, he said softly.
How the hell would you know? Youre down here watching hockey instead of participating at our wedding reception!
He winced and all signs of arousal disappeared. Jesus, Dande, when you talk like that it sounds soweird.
Micky, Im looking at you like Im seeing you for the first time.
What the hell does that mean? His eyes narrowed. Seeing him for the first time What the hell was she on about? Shed already done a pretty good job at making him feel guilty, now she was digging for his balls. There was no way hed allow her to do that.
It means, Im seeing you in a different light and I dont like what I see.
Oh, here we go. You want to fight, dont you? Youre not happy unless theres drama or that all the attention is on you.
Its my wedding day, she snapped.
Im sorry. Youre making me crazy. He exhaled, closing his eyes momentarily.
Like I said, I dont like what I see here, or for the future. Its set a lot of questions and doubts in motion. Major doubts. Ones I cant get a handle on and it scares me.
Doubts? What are you talking about? He opened his eyes and cupped her chin, directing her gaze to him.
It scares me a lot, she continued as if he hadnt spoken. In fact, I think we should call a halt to everything before it goes any further.
A halt? I dont understand. He went quiet.
MickyI want an annulment.
Chapter Four
Tears pearled in the corners of her eyes. The impact of the last few minutes had just caught up to her. Unbelievable. One damn weekend. Thats all she wanted. A sports-free wedding weekend. Was it too much to askhope for? How could she have been so stupid?
Hed wholeheartedly agreed. It was a mutual decision. The sportaholic that he was, she had realized this was huge. And she so appreciated his cooperation. Our wedding weekend! He had a hundred other things to do in preparation, besides getting married, how could he miss sports? She couldnt get over his insensitivity.
Her heart broke. Right there, right then, into a million pieces. Blood gushed internally, making her dizzycrazy. She stumbled forward, her hand over her mouth, unsure if she was about to throw up. Ive got to get out of here.
No! He grabbed hold of her arm and pulled her around to face him. Look at me. His free hand moved to her chin, trying to force her to look up.
I cant. Im not sure I even know you any more. Her breathing was fast and painful. She felt a panic attack coming on and could do nothing to prevent it from happening. Yanking her arm from his grip, she turned to run out of the room. She didnt get far.
Dande, wait. Stop! Micky ran after her, catching her before she crossed the threshold to the corridor that led back to the stairway. We have to talk about this.
What more needs to be said, Micky? What? She bawled. Let go.
No. This is crazy. Your reaction to a few minutes of catching the score is ridiculous. Whats the matter with you?
Whats the matter with me? Her tone incredulous, tears poured non-stop in a single file down her rosy cheeks. I cant believe you have the audacity to even ask that. Something inside her snapped. Blindly, she raised her free arm and smacked him on the side of the head. She hadnt aimed. It was a random shot; wherever it landed was fine.
Thats it. Youre out of control. He struggled to capture her free hand and then squeezed them both tightly to his chest.
Im not out of control! she screamed. You are. Dont you see that? What the hell is the matter with you?
Okay, calm down, so we can talk like adults.
Im as calm as Im going to get.
No, youre not. Youre overreacting. He shook her hands until her muscles grew tired of straining against him. He continued to shake her arms, waiting for a sign of slackening.
Let go of me. Her strength resurrected for one last stab, but it was no use. She couldnt fight against his superior strength. He toyed with her.
She had, however, foiled Mickys attempt to pull her in tight. Dande backed away within the circle of his arms, only to twist her ankle in her high heel and stumble off balance. Micky tried to steady her, and he would have had she not tried to use the opportunity against him.
Dandes body spiraled downward. One hand reached out to break her fall while the other was clenched on Mickys lapel, pulling him on top of her. Luckilyor was it unfortunately?he gauged the situation accurately and wrapped his arms tightly around her, cushioning her fall. Dammit, cant you let me go? she wailed.
I told you, no way. He inhaled her scent, his lips feathering her temple.
Get off of me. She attempted to push at his shoulders.
Not until you come to your senses. He shifted his weight so he could look into her eyes.
Dande rolled her head from side-to-side. I cant believe this. None of it.
Are you going to listen now?
No. She swung her hand in an attempt to strike him again.
Micky took hold of her arms. Youre a spoilt brat. If you dont get your way, you throw a tantrum. Grow up.
Dande began to laugh hysterically. The grating sounds scratched her throat, pinching her vocal chords. She avoided looking into his eyes but did notice the red hand print on his face. While you remain a silly little boy, playing your games? Is that how you thought it was going to work?
Oh my God. You have to stop. Youre making me crazy. With one hand he forced her arms above her head and with the other, grasped her chin and pulled her face around to look at him. You know that, dont you?
And youre making me crazy. Her chest expanded with every breath. I still want an annulment.
Jesus Christ! Weve only been married a few hours. That would be some kind of record.
Yeah, record. If its a record or a statistic, you understand that, but anything else just whizzes right over your heador through it. The ceaseless heaves of her chest, her deflated feelingit was an oxymoron. No. Her punctured spirit was very real. Shed never hit this low in all her life.
Thats not true. He exhaled shakily. Dande, please. I said Im sorry. I didnt mean to do this. Time just got away from me.
Same old story, isnt it?
What the hell are you talking about?
Ive heard it a million times. And you know what? It was okay, because I understood its your life, your livelihood and that Im the one who has to learn to fit in. But not this time, Micky. Her tone was dangerously low and she strained to keep it there. This is our fucking wedding weekend. You pushed me too far.
Im sorry. I didntrealize it meant that much to you. He pressed himself against her body, his thumb rubbing her upper arm.
You certainly didnt. What else dont you realize about me, Micky? Her breathing was now on an even level. After we spent a year together going out, then a years engagement, do you know anything about me at all?
Of course I do. What kind of question is that?
Whats my favorite color?
Umm She saw his eyes roll with his thought process. Youre always in some form of black and white. So, itsblack and white, he said hesitantly.
Wrong. Not my favorite. That doesnt surprise me though. I cant count how many times I told you your team colors are my favorite, which is why I agreed to have so much red and white for the wedding. I guess you forgot.
I did. Damn. I remember now. His mouth was just above hers, his breath fanning her skin.
Micky, get off me. Her eyes locked with his, unyielding. She watched the surrounding skin pucker as he narrowed his eyes in a look that penetrated her soul.
Only if you promise to go back upstairs, carry on as usual and forget about this misunderstanding.
Dande shook her head from side-to-side. No, Micky.
Cmon, this is ridiculous. Our guests will be wondering where we are.
Im sure your teammates have spread the word by now. Her head slumped to the side, her eyes resting on the old, patterned sofa against the white wall.
Mickys lips lowered to her neck. They were hot, impassioned and slid, feather-like, from the base of her ear to the curve of her shoulder. Gradually the pressure increased, his tongue drew semi-circles while his mouth suckled on her flesh. Mmm, you smell so good. My favorite perfume.
Get off me. She exhaled, fighting to keep her eyelids from shutting.
Kiss me, Dande. His mouth sought hers.
I cant. Her muscles labored to stay indifferent, her head swung to avoid his mouth.
Yes, you can. He swooped to capture her lips, catching the corner of her mouth. I know you want to.
Dande forced her arms to move and pushed against him. It was like hitting a brick wall. Although the strength behind her push had somewhat slackened, the realization of it did something to her. As angry as she was, she did love the man. If she let him, he could talk and coax her into anything. Probably even make love right there on the church basement floor. No. She was letting her lust overtake her logic. We cant.
Yes, we can. His breath was warm and sweet on her cheek.
Let me get up, Micky.
Youre not yelling. Thats a good sign. He pecked her cheek. If I let you up, will you come upstairs with me and carry on with all our guests?
Youre heavy. She tried to shift his weight.
That sounds like a yes to me. Close enough. He smiled and rolled away from her.
Dande accepted his hand up. Micky, Im still angry.
I know you are. Lets just get back to our guests, get this evening over with and then well sort this all out later, when were alone. Okay? He squeezed her hand.
Okay. She exhaled, straightening her dress and veil. Imsorry for flying off the handle like that. Its just your promise meant the world to me and when I saw you
Shh, I know. He placed his index finger over her lips, preventing her from saying more. Cmon, lets go. He took her arm in a proprietary gesture.
Upstairs, the party was in full swing. Almost every adult was participating in the Chicken Dance, which in itself was both disarming and humorous to watch. Suddenly the lead singer realized they were back and called to them to dance their first dance. The band struck up a tune and she and Micky made their way to the center of the dance floor.
The force of his arm around her lower back was unrelenting. He held her tight, her thighs plastered to his through the material of her dress. People are watching us.
Sorryhe let up a fractionand Im so sorry I missed this the first time round. His lips slid over her temple.
Dande rested her cheek on his. After this dance, Im going to need a drink, Micky. Im parched.
So am I. Ill go and get us a bottle of champagne and whatever else you want.
That sounds good. Dandes body slumped even though the level of energy in the hall was high. When the music died, the crowd clapped and couple by couple reclaimed the dance floor, much to her satisfaction.
Micky led her back to the head table. Wait here, sweetie. Ill get our refreshments while you sit and catch your breath.
Thanks. She watched him weave through the crowd toward the bar, stopping to talk to different people as he went. He was such a people person. The personable Micky Foreva, everyones hero, everybodys friend. From playing hockey in the streets as a kid to the NHL, hed come such a long way. Hed fulfilled his lifelong dream. She realized there was a lot of excitement attached to that, and he was still relishing every moment. She understood. Sometimes it was a little overwhelming for her. Getting used to and fitting into his world wasnt just something she stumbled into. She had to learn, make major adjustments to her life, her dreams. Her quest of becoming a theater actress went on hold the day she met Micky. Their lives, their future, depended on what happened in Mickys life. It was that way from the beginning; she knew that going into the relationship. And she made no demands on him because this was her future, too. All she asked for is this one weekend.
Where did you disappear to? Lisa came up behind her.
You wouldnt believe it, even if I told you. She half smiled at her friend.
Your drinkyou dont have one. Do you want me to run to the bar for you?
No. Mickys taking care of it. Thanks anyway.
Well, I need one. Come with me to the bar and you can tell me all the details as we go. Lisa tugged on her hand.
I think Ill just sit for a minute.
Cmon. Come with me, please. Tell me, were you two doing the naughty in the vestibule? Father Rex will have heart failure. She pulled Dande to her feet.
Lisa, youre killing me here. We werent doing the naughty. She sighed.
Okay, I believe you. You could never get back in that dress by yourself anyway. Lisa pulled her toward the bar. Whats the matter, Dande, you seem quiet.
Do I? She hustled to keep up with Lisa.
Yes. Are you tired?
A little. As she approached the bar, she saw Micky bypass the lineup and head straight behind the bar. She supposed he was going to get the bottle of champagne himself.
Do you want something while you wait for your champagne? Ill get two of whatever you feel like. She pulled Dande to the front of the line. Youve got pull here, you know.
No. Ill wait. You get whatever you want.
Oh, I will. She let go of Dandes hand as she turned to speak to the bartender.
After a minute or two when Micky hadnt come back yet, Dande walked around the bar to see what was taking so long. What she found wasnt Micky debating over what bottle of champagne to choose from, instead he was plugged into a transistor radio, listening to the game. Her mouth dropped open just as he turned around to see her standing there.
Once again her pulse shot through the roof, her heart plummeted to unthinkable depths and the shock of both jolted her into running away. She had no idea where to run. Tears began to gather in her eyes once more, making her dash all the more difficult. She found herself in the middle of the dance floor, looking in one direction and then the other. Dande caught a few curious looks from the crowd before making her way to the stage. A force from within propelled her up the three steps and over to the microphone. She gripped it with both hands. Ladies and gentlemen, friendsFather Rexthe marriage is over!
Chapter Five
Half the crowd in the hall fell silent and turned toward the voice on the stage. Only when she repeated her words did everything come to a complete standstill. Dande stood for a moment, staring at the sea of immobile people who stared back at her. Her vision was blurred by the steady flow of tears that streamed from the corners of her eyes onto her cheeks. Turning from the microphone, she attempted her way off the stage. The guitar player assisted her down the few steps, and she was grateful for the help. Two people took her gently by the arms and tried to guide her to a seat. She didnt look to see who they were, she just kept her gaze straight ahead of her. Swarms of people moved around her, most with startled looks on their faces.
Dande? Leona Fields shooed the two Samaritans away and steered her daughter to a seat. What the hell are you doing? You just stood up on the stage in front of everyone and announced the marriage is overwhose marriage? Certainly not yours.
Mine, Mother. I meant what I said. The marriage is over. I want an annulment.
What are you saying? What happened? Dan! She waved for her husband to come forward.
A lot has happened, Mother. Can you and Dad take me home, please?
Dan! Leona yelled, looking over her shoulder for her husband.
Dande? Dan knelt to face her. Whats going on?
Daddy, the marriage is over. I want an annulment. She held her fathers gaze.
My dear, thats ridiculous. Youre barely married as it is. He took her hands. Now, calm down and tell me what this is about.
Dande. Micky elbowed his way through the crowd. Let me explain.
What the hell did you do, Son? Dan shifted his gaze to his new son-in-law.
Nothingreally. He knelt in front of his wife, beside her father. Dande, I was just getting the final score while I picked out the champagne. Thats all.
You think I dont know that. She refused to look at him, instead staring steadfastly ahead.
Baby, Im sorry. Lets go somewhere and talk. Its nearly time to leave for the honeymoon limo anyway.
No. Im going home. To my homealone.
Dande, what the hell is this about? Her father ran his hands through his hair.
You heard him, Dad. Nothing more needs to be said. Now, if you dont mind, Ill find my own way home.
Dande, Jesus Christ, stop this. Micky stood up and walked around her in frustration.
You stop it, Micky! she yelled. This time her eyes zeroed in on him.
Okay, listen you two Her father got to his feet also. Let me get Father Rex to show you into an office so you can work this out. I dont think all these people need to know your business. Father Rex? He motioned with his hand to the minister. Can you show us into your office, please?
Of course. Follow me.
Dad, I dont need to do that, Dande protested.
Yes, you do, young lady. Lets go. His tone was stern, no nonsense.
The small group followed Father Rex to the church office, where Dan closed the door behind them. Okay, you two, Im not sure I know what this is all about, but Father Rex and I are going to give you twenty minutes to work it out on your own. If that doesnt do the trick, well go into plan B.
Which is? Dande couldnt help herself. If anybody had any kind of a plan, shed like to hear it because she was out of ideas.
Wellgo into that if we need to. Dan exchanged looks with the minister, an indication he had no clue either.
Actually, Dad, Father, you dont have to go. Its just like I said. The marriage is over and I want an annulment.
Dont you think I have anything to say about that? Micky cut in.
No, she stormed. Youve more than done enough.
Okay, Father Rex and I will leave you to it. Well be just outside the door. With a final look at the two of them, Dan closed the thick oak door behind them.
The click of the handle resounded loudly in the quiet aftermath. Dande slowly walked to the single window behind the huge wood desk. The view of the full parking lot, a reminder of the crowd in the hall celebrating her nuptials. I dont think theres anything more that needs to be said.
Dande, youre being ridiculous.
Huh! Yeah, its meall me. Her words croaked in her throat. Youre the innocent bystander, right?
Rightno, no, not at all. She heard him walk toward her.
Dande felt his breath on her neck. The tiniest hairs, free from her French roll, wafted from the sweet respiration, initiating a trickle of gooseflesh down her back and arms. She shivered. I guess it was too much to ask. She exhaled, her body drooping on the window frame.
You are so stubborn. I knew that about you, but I didnt realize just how deep rooted it was.
I didnt realize it either, she admitted honestly. Her upbringing had never swerved around and glared at her right in the face before. Neither had it been pointed out to her, at least not by Micky, so it came as a surprise. Am I really behaving childishly? Suddenly, the idea that it was possible made her stomach churn. No. He was making this her situation. He promised her. He reneged on his promise and was twisting it so she was the one at fault.
Are we going to be able to get past this, Dande? His right hand lightly grasped her upper arm.
I dont know. She sniffed. I mean, this makes me question everything. The haste to get married, my ability to accurately judge people, whether Im capable of having a happy future.
What? Now what are you talking about? He squeezed her arm, trying to pull her around to face him. She resisted.
Its true, Micky. If Im so childish and spoilt, then I saw you and our life together through a childs eye, which accounts for my fantasy. My hopes and dreams arent based in reality and are therefore a figment of my imagination. Right?
Ah, shit. Youre talking stupid again. This time he did manage to turn her around.
You say things like that to me all the time, which reiterates the fact you think youre speaking to a child. She let her eyes fall to his chest. Why is it stupid, Micky? Tell me.
Because Im sorry. I dont mean to talk down to you. Its just this whole situation is getting way out of hand. Im trying to pull you back to the present. The muscles in his cheeks flexed as he exhaled.
Pull me back to the present? she repeated, her tone incredulous. You mean from my rose-colored world?
Now youre putting words in my mouth. Dont do that. He tried to lead her away from the window.
Micky, I think we have a bigger problem here than either of us thought. The adult thing to do is put things back the way they were until were both ready to take this marriage step.
We are ready, Dande. His other hand took hold of her upper arm.
No, youre not. And Im not ready for a future full of disappointment.
Thats it. I dont want to hear any more nonsense, he hissed.
You forgot to add, naughty girl. She struggled against his steely grip, but he wouldnt let go.
Its like you want me to say that. Now that youve started this, you need to justify it by drawing me into battle. Thats what youre doing. His fingers dug into her arms.
Bull. She felt the expression on her face knurl with anger. Emotion built up inside her and neared the verge of explosion. The more they talked, the more she realized they were at an impasse with no way out, no way around. He accused her of being headstrong, but he was worse. He created this fiasco by doing what he did, and the fact that he refused to own up to it irked her no end. Im going to call Dad. Again his grip arrested her.
No. Lookthis is crazy. We should be toasting each other, not fighting. He leaned her against the window frame, pressing his body against hers. Dande, I love you. Do you love me?
I dont doubt you love me, Micky. You just dont love me enough. Believe me, this is the only way. Please let me go.
Whats an annulment going to accomplish?
Itll give us time to re-assess things without any pressure. Since Micky restricted any attempts to move away, Dande let her head rest against the wall.
I dont need to re-assess. Automatically his lips descended on her neck.
Yes, you do. Thats why were in this mess. She wiggled, trying to lessen the onslaught of those sexy lips. They werent going to change her mind this time.
Can I kiss you? His lips trailed a path to her cheek.
No. Our time is almost up. She tried to avoid his lips but failed miserably. I have to try and explain this to my father.
How about explaining it to me, because Im pretty fucking messed up right now. His lips feathered her jaw line before pulling away.
So am I, Micky. So am I. No sooner had she mouthed the words, the door opened and both fathers walked in. Dad, Father Rex, come in. She sidestepped her husband and took a few steps forward.
Well? her father prompted. Is everything worked out? His hopeful look melted her heart.
In so far as an annulment goes, she replied, unable to look into his eyes.
Damnation! Sorry, Father Rex. Im a little upset right now. Her father shoved his hands into his pockets.
Of course you are, Dan. We all are. Lets all take a deep breath and try to relax, shall we? The ministers look encompassed them all, his right hand extended as in the beginning of prayer.
Father Rex, Dande began. I just want to put a quiet end to an exhausting day.
Impossible, my dear. What youre proposing doesnt have a hope of a quiet ending.
Dande, what on earth is this all about? Lets try and fix this. We can do it, right here, right now. What do you say?
Dad, I know what you want me to sayshe lowered her voice, her tone sympatheticbut its not going to happen. Im sorry.
Micky, what can you tell me? Her father refused to give up.
Not much more, Im afraid. Your daughter is extremely stubborn andI guess I am too. He exhaled and turned toward the window, his body language deflated. I cant change her mind.
Okay. Father Rex went to his desk, pulled out his chair and sat down. Weve given you time and opportunity to clear this up and since you cant, I have a suggestion if anyone here wants to hear it.
Of course, Dan and Micky responded simultaneously.
Dande? His questioning look did not waver.
YesFather Rex, she began hesitantly. Id like to hear your suggestion. Curiosity gripped her as much as it did her dad and Micky. All eyes were fixed on Father Rex.
Good. He took a moment to reach for his glasses before he pointedly looked at each of them in turn. Its very simple, really. Dande, my dear, if you want an annulment, then thats what youre going to get.
What? Her mouth dropped open. Did I hear you correctly? Of all the things she expected, this wasnt one of them.
You did. He moved his glasses to the top of his head and leaned back in his chair. Butand its a big butits going to be done my way.
Chapter Six
Your way? Dande looked from Micky to her dad to Father Rex.
Yes, its very unorthodox, but I have heard of it being done once before. Would you like to hear the plan?
Sure, she replied.
Go ahead. Dan waved his hands in mid-air, giving Father Rex carte blanche.
Ill listen to anything right now, Micky said in a low tone.
Good. Have a seat, people. He motioned toward the empty chairs on the other side of his desk. Okay, for this to go off without a hitch, I will need complete cooperation from all of you, and everyone in the hall. Right now, I need to hear it from you three.
You have our cooperation, Father Rex, the men said one after the other.
Dande? You too? Even if the plan is off the beaten path, humbling, and maybe even a little humiliating?
Ummyes, of course. Youre the one with the plan. Well all abide by it. Promise.
Great. Here it is. He cleared his throat. Theres going to be another ceremony in the church. This one will reverse everything said in the first one. Understand?
Eryes. She was unsure where Father Rexs plan was headed. She stared at him, transfixed.
Instead of your father walking you down the aisle, this time it will be Micky who will do it. Ill perform a reverse ceremony and then Micky will hand you back to your father. Afterwards, well all return to the hall where well make our farewell speeches. Any questions?
A complete ceremony? She couldnt help but wonder what the purpose of such an elaborate scheme would accomplish. Why couldnt he just say a few words here in the privacy of his office? His look matched his no-nonsense tone. Frankly, she was too afraid to ask. He said hed heard about this being done before, so obviously he knew what he was doing. And it did have merit She glanced at Micky. The confused look on his face matched the one on her dads. Neither of them spoke, they just stared at Father Rex.
Anything I can do? Dan asked after a few seconds of uncomfortable silence. He moved forward in his chair, an indication he was ready to get the ball rolling.
As a matter of fact, yes. You can gather the guests in the hall and lead them back into the church. As they file in, have them scratch their name out of the guest book before taking their seat.
No problem. He stood up.
Scratch their names out? Dande asked. Is that really? I mean, of course. It makes sensekind of. She looked up at her father. He wasnt smiling. He wasnt questioning any of this. Why should she? Micky was still slumped in the chair, a bemused aura surrounding him. He looked so somber. She would have liked to ask him his opinion about all of this, but there was no time. Once Father Rex finished speaking, things happened fast. Too fast.
There was a whirlwind of activity. Once, when Dande looked around, people moved in slow motion. She rubbed her eyes. It was surreal. With the bat of an eye, normal activity resumed and she found herself on the threshold of the church entrance on Mickys arm.
Music. Someone was singing, which immediately hushed the crowd. Dande didnt recognize the song but the words were poignant. There goes my only possession. There goes my everything. Jesus! The lyrics tore at her heart.
Dandes first steps were tentative. She steeled her eyes to stay straight ahead and not wander into the crowd. She could imagine the questioning looks on their faces. And her mother, Mickys parents No, she couldnt look at them. What must they be thinking? The worse part of it all, it wasnt anything she could explain.
Before she knew it, she and Micky stood in front of Father Rex, who looked at each of them before he began. Dearly united. We are gathered here once again, to undo what God has coupled. From this day forward, I know each of you, separately, will be happy. Alone. If being alone is your chosen path, may you each wallow in your happiness and contain your enthusiasm for you alone to sustain. May you shout it to no one and may you find comfort with your inner self. Alone, and apart from any other, may you prosper free from disturbance, companionship or association, from this moment, till death shall you remain. He stopped and turned. Do you, Micky James Foreva, return Dande Marie Fields to her lawfully bound family? To give back to those who will love, cherish and console her for the rest of her days?
II do, Micky said unsteadily, eyeing both she and Father Rex.
And do you, Dande Marie Fields, return Micky James Foreva to his lawfully bound family? To give back to those who will love, cherish and console him for the rest of his days?
It was a long moment before Dande could reply. Father Rexs words stung, forcing her to see the severity and permanence of what was taking place. Her heart was in her throat, constricting her voice, yet everyone waited for her reply. I do, she felt compelled to say.
May I have the rings back, please? He watched as she and Micky pulled off their rings and set them in his hand. Thank you. Father Rex closed his eyes, folded his hands, pulling them to his chest. Lord, your blessing on these gold bands is no longer required. Please rescind your love and faith from this pair and relocate your promise and fidelity to others more craving of thy bounty. He made a sign of the cross and turned once again toward Micky. Do you give this ring back willingly, with the promise to never lay eyes on it again? To distance yourself from what it entails and to follow the dictation of your heart from this moment on?
Dande saw Micky take a deep breath. When tears pricked his eyes, she couldnt hold hers back any longer. She used her hands to wipe her eyes but couldnt keep up with the steady flow. Through the blurred vision, she saw Micky start to make a move toward her, but he stopped, his body slumping. Yes, he said simply, shrugging his shoulders.
Oh God. Father Rex turned toward her. Is he going to ask me the same question? The quiver she felt in her knees had to be noticeable; she looked around for something to lean on. Nothing. Dande, do you give this ring back willingly, with the promise to never lay eyes on it again? To distance yourself from what it entails and to follow the dictation of your heart from this moment on?
He did it. He asked her. She swallowed. Micky had already answered so she had no choice, not with a church full of people watching. Oh God, was this the best plan they could come up with? What could she say? She couldnt think. Yes, she blurted out, her chin resting on her chest.
Good. Youre both doing very well. Now, repeat after me, please. He cleared his throat and wiped his forehead with the back of his hand. I, Micky James Foreva, promise to put aside my love, disavow, disjoin and not fulfill our dreams and desires as long as we both shall live.
Dandes stomach churned. She heard Micky repeat a semblance of what Father Rex said. Now it was her turn. Damn.
Dande? she heard Father Rex prompt.
I, Dande Marie Fields, promise to her voice broke put aside my love, disavow, disjoin and not fulfillshe wiped the tears away from her cheeksour dreams and desires as longas we both shall live. She sighed audibly and tried to calm herself.
Micky, Dande, I now pronounce you free and unbound by the ties of matrimony.
Micky took her hand and squeezed. His strength filtered through her body, making her shiver from head to toe. Dande squeezed his hand in return. She clutched it like a lifeline. Hearing her mother sob in the background didnt help matters any, but it kept her from turning and facing the crowd. What the hell had just happened? She had lived out her worst nightmare, with a couple of hundred witnesses to boot.
Who gives this woman away? Father Rexs voice rang out loudly amidst the quiet.
It was a long time before Micky responded. For a moment Dande thought no one was going to answer, but when he did, the sound rang out with definite finality.
I do, he said conclusively and dropped her hand.
Chapter Seven
Dande listened to Father Rex instruct the crowd to proceed into the hall and that he, Micky and herself would be along soon. She heard the shuffling of feet and quiet murmurs as she stood in the same spot until everyone had filtered out. Only then did she blow air out of her lungs, shifting her weight to one foot. Father Rex, that was excruciating. She unclipped the veil from her head.
I know. It was for me too. How are you holding up, Micky?
Im okay, he replied, his tone sounding deflated and weak.
Dande looked over at him. His face was drawn, his skin pale. Her heart bled. Father Rex, I dont know what to say.
Come here, my dear. He opened his arms to embrace her. We all need a hug right now.
Micky stepped forward and embraced them both. I have to believe the worst is over, Father.
It is, he said encouragingly. Chin up, you two. You did very well. This is what you wanted, right?
Dande was the first to step away from the embrace. Right She didnt look at Father Rex, noticing Micky didnt reply. He stood silent beside the minister, his hands fidgeting with his pockets. Whats next?
Well, now its time to join the guests in the hall. Are you both ready? His look went from one to the other. There was a moment of silence. Dande? Micky?
ErFather Rex, is that really necessary? Dande asked, hoping against hope it could all end there. I went through with this, but going back to face all those people is too over-the-top.
Perhaps, but necessary nonetheless. Just as you wanted to tell the world and share your happiness when you wanted to marry Micky, you now have to share your feelings about wanting an annulment.
But why?
Because, my dear, in the middle of your reception, you made a conscious, adult decision that didnt just affect yours and Mickys lives, but the lives of everyone present. Think about it. Your mother-in-law isnt your mother-in-law anymore; Mickys nephew isnt your nephew. He exhaled sharply. What you decided affected everyone here, and just as you all celebrated your union, you all need tounderstand the parting. Make sense?
The lines around the ministers eyes and forehead cut deeper than she remembered. The daythe ordealhad taken its toll on him. His flushed cheeks were indicative of that. Dande didnt want to give him any more of a hard time. All she wanted was to get it over with in as dignified a manner as possible, for everyones sake. Very well, Father Rex. Ill face up to my decision.
Good girl. Lets go. He indicated the way with his right hand. However this plays out, shall be.
*****
Father Rex followed the newly-annulled couple into the hall, feeling every year of his age. How had things disintegrated so fast?
He slowly shook his head in bemusement. Dande wasnt a bad person. Spoilt? Yes. Headstrong? Definitely. Obstinate? That too, but not bad. She was passionate about everything, loyal to a fault and very, very loving. Micky was her perfect match, so what went wrong? How had he failed herthem? Had he been too strict with her when she was growing up? Too indulgent? If he had failed Dande and Mickytoday was testament to that failurethen surely he had also failed his congregation.
His mind wandered to his church, his family. Dear Mrs. Howe, a sweeter, lovelier lady you could never meet, was pushing ninety and had become quite set in her ways. He had received a rather urgent call from her, demanding he come at once because her granddaughter had been possessed by the Devil. When he had arrived at her home, it was to find Becky sitting on the stoop, locked out of the house. It took him quite a few hours to convince Mrs. Howe that Becky was not possessed at all; she was just practicing her Tai Chi, a perfectly acceptable form of exercise in the Lords eyes.
Mr. Abernathy, a perfectly respectable member of the community with a perfectly respectable job, was anything but behind closed doors. He had an unfortunate habit of dressing up in leather and lace before surfing the internet for pornography, masturbating as he went. He would then go into confession to ask for forgiveness. Father Rex had asked him why, if he truly wanted absolution, did he continue to dress up and visit these websites. His response was, Father, the mind is truly willing. I do not want to do this. But the flesh is very weak.
And then there was young Gavin Robert. A typical smart-mouthed, rebellious teenager, always pushing the envelope. Why he attended church services every week, Father Rex couldnt fathom, but he enjoyed their conversations. Young Gavin stole at every given opportunity, and was always caught. The contraband was always returned before the local sheriff escorted him to church. Gavin would go into confession, where Father Rex would always ask him, Why did you steal? and Gavin would always reply, The Devil made me do it. After that, they would have in-depth conversations about the bible and its many different interpretations.
No, watching Dande surreptitiously look at Micky, love blazing in her eyes, he hadnt failed her. She was just another member of his congregation who demanded his pastoral duties be creative and tailored just for her. Things would work out, he was certain of it.
*****
When the three of them walked into the hall, the crowd fell silent, but Father Rex motioned with his hands that everything should carry on as usual. The band struck up again and looking around, Dande noticed everyone tried very hard to act normal and upbeat. Something for which she was thankful.
Dande, this looks like another first dance for us. Shall we take a stab at this one?
Might as well. I dont want to face all the questions just yet. Lets do that, shall we?
Excuse us, Father. Micky took her elbow and walked her onto the dance floor.
Dande placed her arm around Mickys shoulder. Oh God, Micky, Ive never been through anything so humbling. I feel like my insides are exposed for all to see. She exhaled as she stared at his shoulder.
Me too. I dont know what to think about all of this. I dont know what to say to my folks, friendshell, I dont even know if were legally annulled. Whats worse, I dont have the balls to ask anybody a damn thing. Im numb.
Same here. She pulled a stray tendril of hair out of the corner of her mouth.
I feel like a hind quarter of beef, strung up to dry. His warm breath puffed near her ear. I guessthats the point of this whole exercise. Not only for us to see our inner selves, but for everyone else to see what we are, or not see.
I guess so. She sighed. I know I certainly feel different right now. By that I mean, not myself.
So do I. How different do you feel? He twisted his head to look down at her.
Like Ive been dragged out of adolescence into adulthood, she said simply. It was a humiliating lesson that taught her it was high time she grew up a little bit. After going through what we just did, its hard to remember what the hell I was so angry about.
Same with me. I havent thought about the game or the score once. Somehow, it just isnt a priority anymore.
Father Rex is a wise old man. Dande let her head rest on Mickys shoulder. I love this song.
Another couple tapped them on the shoulder. The intrusion jolted both of them. Reluctant, they let go of each other and spun into the arms of their friends. Dande watched as Micky wrapped his arms around the shapely Andrea, unable to suppress the fierce coil of jealousy that sprung up inside her. David swung her around in the opposite direction, but Dandes gaze continued to follow Micky and Andrea. The fingers of his right hand were tightly entwined with hers, his left hand splayed across her bare back. His head tilted forward to whisper in her ear. The visual stabbed at her heart.
Although David mumbled niceties in her ear, she barely heard him. She smiled and acknowledged his words then allowed her gaze to seek out Micky and Andrea. What was he telling her? What was she asking? Damn. She needed a drink, or something to calm her nerves.
When the singer announced the cutting of the cake, she was thankful. She met Micky at the dessert table and together they posed for a few pictures. Dande cut Micky and herself a piece of cake. She was careful to place them on plates with a fork tucked beside them. The two pieces she carved out took nothing away from the five-tiered beauty. Before she knew it, the church ladies had arrived to roll away the table and cut up the rest of the cake for the guests. The tower she safely stood behind was now gone. She and Micky stood alone where everyone could see them.
Someone must have waved a magic wand because the crowd magically regressed to a distant background. She hadnt expected to be pleased about it, or to see the wide smile on Mickys face. Torn between her thankfulness about the crowd fading into the distance and her surprise to see the beautiful smile light up Mickys face, she decided to concentrate on his smile. The fact that he could find it within himself to still smile at her was amazing. She could feelsensethat under his smiling surface there smoldered stronger feelings. Love, in its purest form
Micky picked up the glass that had been set on the table for them and placed it in her hand. He picked up his and very gently clinked the one in her hand, his eyes flicking from hers to her mouth. They both sipped from the champagne flutes and as she watched him swallow the bubbling liquid, his Adams apple bobbed upward. The poor man went from pale to flushed so many times today, but right now he was somewhere in between. He looked like a man on the downswing after a hectic day, which was the truth.
Dande glanced at him from under her lashes, pretending to enjoy her champagne. Licking her lips, she said huskily, Micky, I dont know about you, but Ive got to get out of here soon. This has been the strangest day and I need to get to the end of it. So
I know, he said, interrupting. I feel the same. Im just bouncing from adrenalin right now. He checked his watch. Dont we have a limo due here in a half hour. Or is that cancelled?
No. Youre right. I mean, its not cancelled. The limo to take us to our honeymoon suite is due here in thirty minutes. How weird is that?
It may be weird, but its our ticket out of here. Lets just hold it together till then. Can you do that?
Hell yes. Ive made it so far, havent I? She smiled and tilted her glass to her mouth.
You know something, Dande? He twirled the champagne in his glass.
What?
After all thisthis entire bizarre day he motioned with his hands I stilllove you. He looked down. I guess I just wanted you to know that.
Dande couldnt stop her heart from bursting with joy. Every muscle strained to keep her tears from spilling over. Oh, Micky, I love you too. What the hell have I done?
Shh. Remember, keep it together. His smile was broad. Lets diffuse some of these pointed stares. Thirty minutes is a piece of cake. You can do it.
Im not so sure now. Her voice cracked and she half-turned her back to the crowd.
Yes, you can. We made it this far. Look he pointed to his watch twenty-eight minutes.
Dande chuckled out loud. I guess well manage. Knowing our luck, the limo wont show up.
Micky pulled out his cell phone. Give me a minute. Ill double check.
Dande heard Micky speak a few short, curt sentences before he cut the connection. She glanced up at him. Soare they coming for us?
You bet they are. On their way as we speak. Feel better?
Yes, amazingly so. What can it be now, twenty-five minutes?
Exactly.
Thank God.
Lets eat our cake. He picked up his plate and motioned for her to do the same.
Yes, good idea. Her hands shook when she picked up her plate. Originally Id planned to smear this all over you. Somehow it doesnt seem appropriate now.
You what? He was genuinely taken back. You were actually going to plaster me with cake?
Yes. Dont worry, Ill spare you that. She looked up and caught the daring look on his face. You wouldnt?
Under the circumstances, no, I wont. Only because our guests may take it the wrong way. You know what I mean? He rolled his eyes.
Dande couldnt help but smile. A vision of the two of them slinging cake at each other right now, in front of all those people, just may bring the police. Chances were someone would have thought they were trying to kill each other. She could see the headline. Crazed Bride Suffocates Groom with Wedding Cake. I know what you mean. She snickered, using her hand to hide her laugh.
Glasses started to clink. For a moment Dande thought she was hearing things. Then the sounds grew louder as more and more people clinked their glasses. Surely it wasnt for what she thought, was it? Guardedly, she looked out toward the crowd. Micky took hold of her hand. Together they set their plates on another table, uncertain what to do next.
Slowly, Micky pulled her hand up to his chest. He squeezed it tightly and from that, Dande drew his strength. With the glasses clinking, the crowd began to chant. Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! The noise alone was intimidating. They must want to see her kiss him goodbye. What kind of people were they?
Dande half-turned to look up at Micky while he pivoted to meet her. Their eyes met and held. He looked like the little boy from his family photo albums. The censure and the disillusionment were stripped away, leaving a sincere and genuine regard staring back at her. If she were honest, it was always there. It hadnt gone anywhere. Her spin on everything had momentarily blinded her, but now her sight was back. She was seeing the real Micky James, so full of love, concern and respect. The watery pearls in the corners of her eyes were her reward for coming to her senses. Frivolity filled her as she slowly ran her arms up his chest and around his neck. I want to kiss you, Micky.
Go ahead. His crooked smile did more to invite her than his words.
Micky, I
Dont say it, sweetheart. I know how you feel.
Do you? Im not sure you do after all weve been through.
Trust me, I know. His hand began to pull her closer. I know everything there is to know about you. Your ups, downs, quirks, your tantrumswhich I have to admit have dramatically diminished this past yearand your favorite color. He added the last casually.
Well, we sure lived through a major one today. Oh, Micky, believe me when I tell you Ive grown a lot these past few hours. The cheers and chants from the crowd grew louder.
I believe you. He lowered his head. Are you going to kiss me or not?
Oh, Im going to kiss you, she managed to say before wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, pulling his head down to her.
His lips were warm, soft and deliberately tender to her touch. Although he prompted the kiss, he held back, again initiating her response. Both Dandes hands circled his head, yanking him closer still. She squeezed him in place, not wanting to let go. She kissed him with everything she had, not happy until he loosened up and she could feel the deep fire within.
Micky, Dande, someone shouted above the crowd. Your limo is here.
Mickys best man, Mike, took hold of the microphone. A toast, everyone, he yelled out to the crowd. May this couple live in peace and harmony, and may their hearts fill with love and respect. May you leave here today, taking the first steps of your journey together, or separate with each other, as life companions or friends. Whatever you decide, we all love you. Good luck, you guys, and call when you get a chance. Cheers! He swallowed from his glass.
Thank you, thank you. She and Micky blew kisses as they made their way toward the exit and out into the calm, quiet and very dark night.
Chapter Eight
When the doors of the limo shut behind them, a welcome silence fell around them. Both Dande and Micky let their heads fall back against the headrest. Bliss. The driver knew where he was headed, so there was no need for wordsor sound. Finally, serenity offered up its comfort and Dande closed her eyes, not moving when she heard Micky say, Hey, theres champagne in here. You want some?
No thanks. I cant move just yet. I need to rejuvenate.
I hear ya. I feel the same. Just thought Id offer. He tapped his fingers against the door handle.
How far is the hotel? Her lips moved but nothing else.
About forty-five minutes. So relax.
I will. I am. These seats are so comfy. She tried to smile.
I know. He laughed. We sure dont look like a new couple on their way to their honeymoon suite.
God Micky, Im so sorry. She attempted to lift her head.
No, no, Im not complaining, just making an observation.
Ill come to life. Youll see.
The honeymoon suite on the top floor of the Princetown Hotel was beautiful. The first thing she noticed was there wasnt a team logo in sight. The king-size bed and night tables occupied one side of the room. The table, sofa, chairs and dressers were contemporary-styled and set up to best accentuate the large space.
Dande noticed their overnight bags were set up on the dressers, and then as she looked around, she saw the gorgeous bouquet of roses, a basket of fruit, more champagne and the stack of beautiful wedding cards. Looks like someones been busy setting this up. It had to be Lisa; shes the only one who had an idea which hotel we were headed.
Very nice. Micky looked around. She has been busy.
Dande walked over to the table and went through some of the cards. Some of the verses brought forth her tears and left them on the verge of spilling over again. Bad idea.
Tears? Whats the matter, Dande?
These damn cards are making me cry.
Oh, I thought
Dande turned to look at him. What did you think? Slowly, she rose and walked toward him.
For a second there, I wasnt sure, he admitted.
When you see tears, whats the first thing that runs through your mind? Pain. I cant bear the thought of inflicting any more on you. Weve been through enough for one day. He paused and took a shaky breath as he ran a hand through his hair. Dande, this is all my fault. I dont know what the hell I was thinking. At the time it sounded so innocent. A television hidden in the basement kept everybody happy. I knowI should have known better. I got caught up in the excitement of both the wedding and the playoffs and let it cloud my judgment.
If youre thinking this is a window on the rest of our lives, youre wrong. Just because I screwed up today doesnt mean Ill make a habit out of it. I mean, Im human. I made a fucking mistake. I hope you know how sorry I am, and I hope you know Ill never do anything like this again. At least not intentionally. But I thought we covered that. Instead I turn around to find you crying and all I can think of now is how unsure I am of anything.
You arent sure? Well I guess I have to do something about that. Its not a good thing when ones partner isnt sure if these are tears of joy or sadness. Not a good thing at all. She unzipped her dress, loosened it, wiggled and stepped out of it, taking the time to lay it on a chair.
Whoa! The word burst from Micky when he saw what she wore underneath. I had no idea, you little minx.
Dande stood before him in a white bustier with long garters holding up white, thigh-high, silk stockings. Her white thong completed the turn-on ensemble. Judging by the look on Mickys face, she knew the salesclerks guarantee of eye-popping drooling wasnt as farfetched as she thought.
Wedding dresses can hide a variety of pleasuresand sins.
I can see that. He took a step closer.
Do you like what you see? She slid her hands up her body provocatively, paying extra attention over the shear triangle hiding her manicured pussy.
Very much. Micky folded her into his arms and kissed her firmly on the mouth before his lips trailed to her ear and neck, where he suckled wetly. As he did so, his right hand dropped to seek her hip, ass and pussy. He tugged at the silky wisp of material, drawing a chuckle from her.
Careful, Micky, youre going to ruin my ensemble. She laughed now, thinking of the salesclerk and how she oversold the outfit.
Ill buy you another one. He lowered his head to her cleavage, stymied by the clips of her bustier. Do you want me to help you get it off?
Yes, yes, please. He watched her fingers unfastening the many clips, his own trying to help but getting in the way. I think I can manage the garters. And he did. Now can you help me out of this monkey suit?
With pleasure. While her fingers unbuttoned and unzipped, Micky shifted and individually took her nipples into his mouth, shamelessly coercing them into hard nubs of arousal. Only then did his mouth trail to her navel. Tiny lines from the tight bustier were evident and he ran his tongue along the length of them.
His tongue flickered back to her navel, forming tiny circles with a measure of theatrics and a dose of excitement. Dande began to feel so good. Like the weight of the world was slowly lifting from her shoulders. She closed her eyes for a moment to revel in the sensation. Ohh! she groaned, maximizing her pleasure.
Touch me, Dande. His breath was hot against her exposed flesh.
Her hands immediately went to his chest then up over his shoulders and neck. As Micky got to his feet, she ran her hands down his ribcage then down over his buttocks. She could feel his muscular, toned body ripple under her fingers. The body of an athlete.
Micky scooped her into his arms before placing her onto the bed. Gently he moved over her, separating her legs with the strength of his. Dande, forgive me, but I cant wait.
I love you, Micky, she heard herself say as he steered his way into her. There was no wasting time. Mickys pace was swift and unhesitant. His large hands grabbed her ass cheeks to help her with her end of the ritual. Already Dande could tell he was straining to prolong their lovemaking, as near as he was to ultimate release. And so was she. Although she didnt think the speed of his pumping could have increased, it did. Before she knew it, she and Micky exploded into orgasmic bliss. Their rejoicing loud and piercing.
In the aftermath, Dande took a moment to recoup. Within seconds she was straining, teasing his cock with a bout of sexy gyrations. His response was to flex inside her, swelling from her eager response. Micky, wrap your arms around me. Sexily she moved from side-to-side. His strong, capable arms and large hands held her firmly while his mouth sought to devour hers.
Youre so hot; Im the luckiest man alive. He found her lips again, crushing them persistently. And you smell so good. I love your perfume.
Fiery sensations consumed her. She wasnt surprised. Micky had always made her feel this way, and he just knew when she was ready. Without missing a beat, Micky pumped her like free gasoline.
Dandes insides were ablazescorchingand Micky didnt let up until the waves of gratification exploded over her before it began to douse itself with orgasm. The abyss she fell into was soothing, all-consuming. By far, this climax was greater than the last. Every organ in her body was liquefying through her vagina and she couldnt stop it, even if she wanted to. She felt relieved, revivedwhole. Everything made sense again. She wanted to hold him forever, kiss him nonstopand thank him for his patience, his love.
After the final crest of his orgasm, Micky shifted his weight. Oh, Dande, Im so glad this all worked out.
Me too. I was just thinking the same thing. She ran her hand over his shoulder.
I love you, Dande.
I love you too, Micky. But I cant help wonder where we stand exactly. I mean, that ceremony we went through wasnt make-believe. What did it all mean? It wasnt just the two of us involved; it was in front of everyone.
I know. He looked down to his left hand. No rings. Dande, we gave back our wedding rings. His eyes flashed with despair all over again.
We did. She raised her bare left hand.
I, erhave it in my pocket. Let me put it back on your finger.
Butshould we? I mean, can we? she stammered.
Micky rolled off the bed and dug through his tuxedo pocket. Yes, we can.
But
Well drive back tomorrow and have a word with Father Rex. How does that sound? Feel better? He sank down beside her and reached for her hand.
Yes The cold metal of the wedding ring left tiny sensations as it slid over the length of her finger, overcoming what doubts she had. I have yours in my reticule. Ill go get it. She padded over to her small purse on the table and fiddled through it for Mickys ring.
You look very sexy, sweetie. Maybe youd better come back over hereright now. He patted the mattress in invitation.
First thing the next morning, Micky called Rather Rex and arranged to meet him and their families in the church office at noon. He also arranged for a limo to make the round trip. Since they were only forty-five minutes away, it was worth the trip back to straighten it all out before they could fully enjoy their short, two day honeymoon.
Ill marry you again if I have to, Micky. Dande glanced at him and reached for his hand. He looked so handsome and relaxed in the back seat, slouched to one side so he could see her every move. His hair was damp from product, his skin freshly shaven. As usual, his cologne was her favorite. He rarely wore anything else now.
We wont have to. Father Rex would have said something before we left on our honeymoon. Right?
Dande squeezed his fingers. I dont know. Im so confused I dont know what to think any more.
Listen, whatever we have to face, well face it together. Stop worrying.
The limo stopped outside the doors of the church office. The driver came around and opened the car door. Dande stepped out first and noticed some familiar vehicles parked in the lot. She took a deep breath and hung onto Mickys arm. It was exactly noon.
Together they walked up the walkway, glancing at each other, anxious to get this over with. It looks like our families are all here, she remarked nervously. I hope thats it. I couldnt stand a crowd of people gawking at me today.
Micky chuckled. Relax, will you. Im telling you youre getting bent out of shape for nothing.
Cmon, lets get this over with. She pulled open the door. As they walked toward the office, a low murmur of voices could be heard. Dande recognized her dads voice above the rest, and a certain placidity enveloped her. Ready?
Micky, Dande, how are you? Father Rex rose and came toward them. Come, sit down, both of you.
Both Micky and she hugged their parents before sitting in the chairs designated for them. Dande sighed and waited for Father Rex to speak. You two look terrific. Im glad you called and came by today. I knew you would. Father Rex sat down at his desk and smiled at each of them.
We had to Father Rex. You must know we have questions. Dande surprised herself; she didnt think she had the nerve to start the proceedings.
Of course, my dear, and it gives me great pleasure to inform all of you that you two are indeed married. You have nothing to worry about.
We are? she couldnt help retort.
Yes, you are.
Butthat ceremony It was so final.
It wasdifferent, Father Rex admitted. But sometimes circumstances decree that desperate measures are the only way to go. We agreed to that.
Dande and Micky looked at each other. You said a lot of things, Father Rex, Dande said. Im a little perplexed.
Dande, my dear, I winged most of it. I needed something short of a miracle to get through to you two. Something that didnt talk down to you, but at the same time delivered a powerful impacta timed-release impact.
I see. Well, I guess you did the right thing.
Im very glad to hear that, because I have to admit I was a little worried about the two of you. However, I see all is well and that love won out in the endas it should have.
I thought you said you heard about a ceremony done like that before, Micky piped in.
Many years ago, another minister in the parish went through a similar thing with a young couple. I just happened to hear all about it. Truthfully, I credit my long relationship with your loving family to trust me in handling this delicate situation. You needed to see and feel the full impact of your decision and it was the only way I could think of to do just that.
I have to say, Im a little surprised. Dande looked around at her mom and dad.
Dande, I cannot undo the vows Id just performed. The faux abrogation was my ploy to make you both see the error of your ways. You have to understand, I was ninety-nine percent sure this was how it would play out. On the chance it didntwell, you both got to know the feeling of separation and decide against it. It was a win-win situation.
Thank goodness you know me so well, Father Rex. Dande smiled.
You had me worried until I saw the two of you leave in the limo. After seeing your facesI knew. He sat back in his chair, a wide smile on his face. If you remember, at one point in the rescindment I told you both to follow the dictation of your hearts from this day forwardand you did. Im proud of both of you.
Dande felt tears prick at her eyes. Sniffing, she rose and hugged her husband, her in-laws and her parents. Father Rex, could you do us one more favor?
Of course, name it. His arms opened wide.
Could you re-bless our wedding rings?
It would be my pleasure. He rose and walked around his desk, taking each of their hands in his. I bless these rings he made the sign of the cross I bless the both of you, may you always be as happy as you are today. He turned and looked at them. Micky andDandelion Fields-Foreva.
